A Review : Mitch Albom's 'Have a Little Faith'

Good morning / afternoon / evening. Today’s post really got the book nerd in me very excited. Why? Because I got to write a post COMPLETELY dedicated to a book. Very dreamy.

Anyway, cut to the chase, I decided to write up a review if you will of ‘Have a Little Faith’ by Mitch Albom. My first experience of Albom was his well-known and recommended novel ‘Tuesday’s With Morrie’. Now that is one heck of a novel, to be discussed another time possibly…

I’d love to say that I searched high and dry for this novel seconds after devouring ‘Tuesday’s With Morrie’, but honestly, that would be lying!! I just so happened to stumble across this book during one of my routinely visits to the charity shops, if you’re an avid book reader, charity shops are seriously the way forward.

Firstly, I’m not here to talk about myself but one fact that is important to note is that I am not in any way a religious person (not that it’s something to be ashamed of either). This fact is relevant to the book.

When I first began this novel, I did question if it was suitable for me, a non follower of religion. After reading the words ‘Reb’, ‘Lord’ and ‘God’ within the first few pages, I could feel myself getting less and less interested in the book. Not to put a downer on religion because I fully accept all kinds of religions, it’s just something that I choose to not follow personally.

However, I carried on reading, because despite the words that didn’t interest me, the novel itself was hard to put down, a very big plus already! I wouldn’t at all say this book is for those who follow religion only in fact I’d highly recommend those who don’t follow and especially those who don’t understand to read it.I would certainly say that it’s a complete eye-opener to religion.

What’s so magical about this novel is that it completely captures you and takes you on a whirlwind of a journey as you get to meet numerous people and hear their stories, which put a lot of my own personal issues into perspective. Take from it what you will, even if what you believe doesn’t include a God.

Throughout the book, you as the reader, are taken through the lives of two different people who come from completely different backgrounds yet come to share the same values of life despite life testing them numerous times. Both stories and outcomes are highly inspirational.

One thing I definitely took from the book was various life lessons, although the book revolves a lot around Churches and Synagogues, as a non religious person, I was truly able to relate to what was being said, including various beliefs taken from the religions, and completely apply it to that I believe myself.

My favourite quote has got to be “When the world quiets to the sound of your own breathing, we all want the same things : comfort, love and a peaceful heart.”

Despite some of us being Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhist, Hindus, Atheists, and so on. We all want the same thing, and that is to live a good life and be happy. Sometimes we make the wrong decisions, sometimes we mess up, but when it comes down to it, we do all want the same.

I would highly recommend this book, it was definitely hard to put down and once I had more spare time, I devoured the pages quicker than I could write this review!!
